Here We Are Now

As the saying goes… those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Such simple truths often house the harshest realities. In that regard, the latest album from Charleston, West Virginia singer/songwriter Karen Allen is a history lesson – a look back, courtesy of hindsight and time, at missteps and muck ups, regrets and resolve, perseverance and peace. But Here We Are Now is also a reflection of the one true thing we are all guaranteed: the present. Indeed, it is a gift, and one that’s especially sweet experienced through the clarity of lessons learned.

Her most personal album to date, Karen’s voice has never sounded as controlled or confident in her twenty years of making music.  She not only composed the music and lyrics on Here We Are Now but also sings and performs drum and guitar duties. The album is produced by Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, R.E.M., Big Star), who adds lush flourishes of piano, keyboards, guitar and backing vocals. Primarily recorded at Ken’s studio near Seattle, Washington, the album also features John Kessler on bass guitar, and Ken’s daughter Aden Stringfellow provides backing vocals on a couple of album tracks.

Forgiveness. Redemption. Gratitude. We are all worthy, in spite of the past or, perhaps, because of it. Either way, that was then. Here we are now.
